Professional Bio

Ted Johnson enters his 12th season with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Lynx, having served as vice president of communications prior to his promotion to chief marketing officer (CMO) and senior vice president  of marketing & communications in 2007. Johnson oversees the strategic direction of ten departments spanning 21 different disciplines that include: analytics & research, community relations, digital media, marketing, public relations, FastBreak Foundation and the teams' radio and television broadcasts. Johnson has also lead the team's public affairs efforts since 2010 -including the drive to renovate Target Center. 

Entering the 2014-15 season, Johnson continues to lead the teams' efforts around the negotiations, design and development of the $99 million dollar arena renovation project that is scheduled to be completed by fall of 2016.  He is also leading the team's construction of a $25 million dollar state-of-the-art training center and corporate headquarters at Mayo Clinic Square which is due to be completed in the spring of 2015.

Johnson's work has been widely recognized in the industry including a regional Emmy award and is listed by Social Media Marketing Magazine as one of the Top 100 CMO's (#50) on Twitter and by CEO World Magazine as one of the most influential CMO's on Twitter.

Prior to joining the Wolves, Johnson spent more than a decade managing dynamic, multifaceted campaigns for clients, policy issues and political candidates.  As a director with public relations agency Weber Shandwick, Ted co-directed the national award-winning teen anti-tobacco campaign called Target Market. In addition, Ted conducted numerous training sessions and workshops for public health organizations and others, focusing on social marketing and effective empowerment strategies.

Before joining Weber Shandwick, Ted spent eight years in government service and political campaign management. Johnson served as deputy campaign manager for Hubert H. Humphrey III's 1998 gubernatorial campaign and held management roles in other national, statewide and legislative campaigns in Minnesota. Johnson also spent time between 1994 and 1996 on the White House advance staff organizing official visits for President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton.

Johnson is an honors graduate from the University of Minnesota-Duluth with degrees in political science and history. He is active in the Twin Cities community having served on the boards of Ronald McDonald House Charities and Athletes Committed to Education Students (ACES) and currently serves on the board of the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce, the Warehouse Business District and 2020 Partners.  He is also active in Twin Cities Dunkers, Norway House and a regular mission member for Serving Our Troops domestic and overseas events.

A native of Coon Rapids, Minn., Johnson, his wife, Lisa, son, Thor, and daughter, Greta, reside in Vadnais Heights, Minn.
